Some eyes are not a standard shape. Keratoconus, corneal scarring, a corneal graft and high or unusual prescriptions can all make off-the-shelf lenses uncomfortable or ineffective.
Custom lenses are designed to your cornea, the clear front surface of the eye, rather than chosen from a range.
Custom scleral lenses are larger rigid lenses that vault over the cornea and rest on the white of the eye, holding a layer of fluid over the cornea. They are often the most comfortable and stable option for keratoconus and irregular corneas.
Custom rigid lenses are smaller lenses that sit on the cornea and give a crisp optical surface over an irregular one.
Every custom lens at Remy starts with Pentacam corneal imaging. A full three-dimensional map of the cornea lets the lens be designed to your eye from the first trial, which means fewer fitting visits and a better final fit.
Once glasses no longer give useful vision, custom lenses are the main way to restore it. Remy fits the lens, monitors the cornea for change at each visit and co-manages with local ophthalmologists, including assessing suitability for corneal cross-linking.
A grafted cornea has a shape of its own and usually needs a custom lens. We have experience fitting patients with corneal grafts and work with the treating ophthalmologist throughout.
Fitting takes more than one visit. The lens is designed, trialled on the eye, then refined until vision and comfort are right. Regular review follows for as long as you wear the lens.
Your first appointment includes corneal imaging and a full examination. You will leave understanding the lens options for your eye and what the fitting will involve. Regular review is critical to ensure the lens maintains an excellent fit and your cornea remains healthy.
