Hyperopia, or long-sightedness, means the eye focuses light behind the retina rather than on it. Children can often compensate by focusing harder, so they may see clearly on a chart while their eyes are working overtime to do it.
A small amount of long-sightedness is normal in young children and often reduces as they grow. Larger amounts, or a big difference between the two eyes, can lead to a turned eye, amblyopia or difficulty with reading and close work.
Because children can hide long-sightedness by focusing through it, drops are often used to relax the focusing muscle so the true prescription can be measured. Vision, eye alignment and how the eyes work together are assessed at the same visit.
Not every long-sighted child needs glasses. Where they do, glasses take the strain off the focusing system and support normal visual development. Where they do not, the prescription is monitored at regular visits as your child grows.
Your child’s first appointment includes a full examination. Drops may be required on indication. You will leave understanding whether glasses are needed now, later or not at all, and when the next check is due.
