MYOPIA
(SHORT-SIGHTED)

Short-sightedness in children
THE CONDITION

Myopia, or short-sightedness, means distant things are blurred while close things are clear. It usually begins in childhood and keeps changing as the eye grows.

Glasses restore clear vision. Managing it means slowing down how fast the eye is changing and tailoring the treatment options to your child.

What to look for
Squinting at the whiteboard
Sitting close to the television or screen
Headaches
A prescription that has moved noticeably between visits
Measured at every visit

Each appointment records the prescription and the measurements that show how the eye is developing, so change is visible between visits rather than assumed.

The options

All options aim to slow down myopia progression. Depending on your child’s age, prescription and lifestyle, options may include spectacle lenses, soft contact lenses, orthokeratology (night lenses worn while sleeping) and prescription eye drops. Each is discussed with you and reviewed as your child grows.

What to expect at Remy

Your child’s first appointment is a full examination with the measurements that set a baseline. You will leave understanding the findings, the treatment options and the review interval.
