Diabetic Eye Care

Diabetic eye examinations,

THE CONDITION

Diabetes can affect the small blood vessels at the back of the eye, a condition called diabetic retinopathy.

In its early stages it causes no symptoms and vision can be normal while change is already underway. Regular examination finds it early, when more can be done.

WHAT THE EXAMINATION INVOLVES

A comprehensive diabetic eye examination at Remy includes a dilated fundus examination. Drops widen the pupil so the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye, can be examined in full and imaged for your file.

Your vision will be blurred and light-sensitive for a few hours afterwards, so plan not to drive and bring sunglasses.

Reporting to your doctors

After each examination Remy writes to your GP, endocrinologist or diabetes educator with the findings, so your eye care sits within the rest of your diabetes care rather than beside it.

How often ?

Most people with diabetes need an eye examination at least every year. Where retinopathy is found, or your GP asks for it, review is more frequent and the interval is set for you.

WHAT IF CHANGE IS FOUND?

Early retinopathy is monitored, with images compared at each visit. Where treatment is needed, Remy refers to a local ophthalmologist and stays involved in your ongoing care.

Your first appointment is a full examination with dilation and baseline imaging. Bring your medication list and your most recent diabetes results if you have them. You will leave understanding the findings, what has been sent to your doctor and when you are next due.
