Difficulty with reading and writing has many possible causes. Vision is one of the easier ones to rule in or out, so it makes sense to check it early rather than last.
An uncorrected prescription, eyes that do not work well together or difficulty holding focus up close can all make reading effortful. These are not learning difficulties, but they can look like them and they can sit alongside them.
Vision at distance and near, the prescription, how the eyes focus and hold focus, how they work together as a pair and how they move across a line of text. Each is a separate skill and any one of them can make reading harder than it should be.
Where a visual problem is found, glasses for close work or a management plan are set up and reviewed. Where the eyes are not the cause, you leave with that ruled out in writing, so you can pursue other assessments with clear information. With your permission, Remy will report to your child’s school or other professionals involved.
Your child’s first appointment is a full examination with the reading-related tests included. You will leave knowing whether vision is part of the picture and what to do about it if it is.
